Medicare may reduce the raise you keep

The standard Part B premium is often deducted from Social Security. A higher 2027 premium can make your bank-deposit increase smaller than the headline COLA.

How it works

How is the 2027 COLA calculated?

SSA uses the CPI-W average for July, August, and September. It compares that average with the third-quarter average from the last year a COLA became effective. The percentage increase, rounded to the nearest tenth, becomes the COLA.

When will it be announced?

The September CPI-W release is scheduled for October 14, 2026. SSA typically announces the COLA after the final third-quarter CPI-W data becomes available. Until SSA publishes the number, every value here remains an estimate or scenario.
